Beginning a drawing often involves fumbling around with the decision of an engaging subject, the choice of a sympathetic graphic medium, and the selection of a suitable paper; occasionally these initial fumbles become dead ends or false starts. The fumbles continue.
Every so often, something might come from out of left field. This small series began with rummaging around in a cupboard. And there they were - the once neatly folded damask napkins, underneath other linen, crumpled; the once tightly bound striped ribbons, at the back, unfurled - both were lively and stripey: here was the still life ready to draw.
